This Barbados holiday apartment with sea view is located within Sion Hill.  Enjoy luxury villa rental accommodation at Skippers House; a very large 1,900 sq ft luxuriously appointed apartment with 2 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.  There are spectacular ocean views to the west and peaceful pastoral scenery on the east, through mature mahogany trees to the plantation’s grass fields. 

Cable TV and DVD are provided, and broadband internet service is installed. 

Sion Hill Plantation is a working plantation of a little less than 100 arable acres, the crops divided between sugar cane and grass for animal feed & fodder. The plantation is situated in St. James overlooking the west coast of Barbados. It is about 7 minutes by car from Holetown and the west coast beaches, premier hotels, shopping, dining and golf; 20 minutes to Bridgetown, and 35 minutes to the airport.

Guests at this holiday apartment have unrestricted use of the 3 acres of surrounding gardens, grounds and facilities.

There are two large swimming pools on the property, one close to the Orchard Apartment, and the other located a short distance away at The Yard.   Please be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty at either pool. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult who can swim.  The Sion Hill House pool was fashioned from the restoration of a centuries old water reservoir which originally was fed from a well just outside the Plantation House. The water from the reservoir tank was used in the running of the plantation’s boiling house to process the sugar cane into sugar and molasses. Although the pool certainly doesn’t look like a water tank any longer, one of the original buttresses can be seen outside the west wall.

The swimming pool at The Yard was constructed in the remnants of a large building which housed livestock and, later on, farm machinery and equipment. The large pool deck is elevated from the surrounding ground level and affords breathtaking views of the ocean; the expansive open deck offers a variety of shade and sun areas.

There are a number of places to walk and enjoy different types of scenery and many of the residents in the area are recreational walkers, some accompanied by their dogs. The main public road stretches for about a mile up the hill between Sion Hill and Springhead Plantations, with pastoral scenery on either side and ocean views to the west. This is a quiet road with little traffic, but common-sense precautions should always be observed. Please remember, too, that the lands on either side of the road are private property.

Because Sion Hill is situated on a hillside, the area is blessed by constant fresh breezes almost the entire year; air conditioning is not required, and fans are needed only on occasion. Sion Hill enjoys one other special blessing in that the entire area, which is surrounded by mature mahogany trees, remains an oasis of privacy in an increasingly popular and developing island. Sion Hill and the two adjacent plantations (Taitts and Springhead) are serviced by one main road, with no connecting roads to other areas; there are no bus routes or traffic to any areas other than the three plantations and the upscale residential sites close by – Turtleback Ridge, Mahogany Woods and Mahogany Park.

The plantation has been owned by the Massiah family since the early 1920’s; three generations of descendants still live on the premises. In 1998 the main plantation house (circa 1790) was completely restored by Ruth Ward (nee Massiah), the present owner. Every effort was made to ensure that the character of the buildings remained as it had been.

Skipper’s House was originally the plantation manager’s house which has been restored to its exact original dimensions, keeping the history of a Bajan plantation home and showcasing some beautiful architectural elements such as the original exposed wooden ceiling beams. It is the ground floor of the Skipper’s House that has been converted into a spacious, comfortable two-bedroom holiday apartment . Rooms are large, airy and cool; the living room looks into a grove of mature mahogany trees and leads out to a private outdoor patio area which in turn leads onto the communal east lawn and orchard. Cable TV and broadband internet service are installed. The two bedrooms (each with private bathroom) are large and comfortable, with generous storage.

Undoubtedly the most comfortable stay. The area was perfect as quiet and cool, good walks with horses and cattle grazing in fields just above us. The breeze flooded our rooms giving perfect conditions for sleeping without the need of air conditioning. Our kitchen was fully equipped with everything one would need for entertaining.
