Let me tell you about our sea turtle holiday experience. Sea turtles were something we had only seen on TV wildlife programmes. However, during one of our holidays, staying on the west coast of Barbados, we were lucky enough to have a truly magnificent and unforgettable experience. Around 7.45 one evening we had just taken our seats on the decking outside one of the beachfront restaurants in Holetown, when we spotted a large dark brown shape, dimly illuminated by the restaurant’s lights, on the shoreline nearby. We thought at first that it might be a large crab or a ray swimming in the shallows. As it came closer, much to our joy and amazement, this soon revealed itself to be a hawksbill sea turtle. Barbados Holiday Eco tours might not be the first thing you think of when you are coming on holiday. However, I am often asked about things to see and do in Barbados. Of course, there are the wonderful beaches, the fabulous dining and great nightlife. As tempting as those options are, I also think it’s great to tear yourself away from the beach just for a while and get off the beaten track to see the whole of Barbados, in all its glory. You might be surprised just what you find, especially for nature lovers, conservationists, and anyone interested in history and heritage. There’s lots going on. I highly recommend a trip to PEG Farm and Nature Reserve in the parish of St Joseph, on the East of the island – a fabulous bio dynamic farm offering holiday eco-tours for all the family – a really great day out. There are many beautiful gardens in Barbados but Huntes Gardens really is something special. Located in the lush hills of St Joseph, just 20-30 minutes drive from Holetown. On a gentle stroll around this enchanting garden, all five senses are indulged: touch, sound, smell, sight and taste!
When you enter the garden, stand still for a moment. Close your eyes momentarily and experience everything that surrounds you. Feel the Caribbean warmth. Maybe a gentle breeze is blowing softly against your skin. Bird song calls to your ear like a gentle bell among the classical music that wafts magically though the garden. Breathe in deeply through your nose whilst catching the merest scent of tropical blooms in the air. Now, pause a moment; and then open your eyes and absorb the botanical crescendo that’s being played out by nature’s sublime orchestra. The scent, the sounds, the feel; the beauty is right there for you to explore, the rich and colourful tapestry that is a ‘garden’.
These fabulous gardens in Barbados, have been created by the horticulturalist Anthony Hunte, whose ancestors arrived on the island in the 1600s in service. Anthony spent two years turning the large natural sink hole into the beautiful garden we see today, and he opened it to the public back in 1997.
Barbados green monkeys can be seen throughout the island. Playful and mischievous, they are fantastic fun to watch. Their expressions and antics are truly captivating. Continue Reading
