Looking for a 3 bedroom vacation rental with pool ? Well Orchard Apartment can offer you not one, but two stunning communal pools at the Sion Hill Plantation, St James, Barbados. The apartment has a sea view and 3 acres of surrounding gardens. The apartment is spacious – over 3,000 sq ft. And, although very modern it is steeped in history as, in bygone days, the rooms which are now beautifully appointed en-suite bedrooms were variously staff quarters, the huge kitchen with open hearth, was the laundry and a “baking room” used by the present owner’s grandmother! The Orchard Apartment was created in 1998 when major renovations to the plantation house were undertaken.
This luxury vacation rental is fully furnished in a pleasingly eclectic mix of modern and traditional mahogany furniture, some pieces of which are family heirlooms. Each of the three large bedrooms has a private bathroom and walk-in closet, and is equipped with king size beds, convertible to twins. The Coconut Suite bathroom has a large tub as well as a shower, the Breadfruit and Mango Suites have showers.
The apartment is fully furnished and equipped, and is completely separate from the rest of the plantation house, with its own entrance and driveway. Cable TV and DVD are provided in the comfortable living room, broadband internet service is installed. A large dining area and patio lounge open off a modern, well equipped kitchen. There is a separate laundry room, large enough to hang out washing, and is also equipped with a washer and dryer.
Our tenants and guests have unrestricted use of the 3 acres of surrounding gardens, grounds and facilities.
There are two swimming pools on the property, The Sion Hill House Pool is close to the Orchard Apartment, and the other pool is located a short distance away at The Yard. Please be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty at either pool. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult who can swim.
The Sion Hill House pool was fashioned from the restoration of a centuries-old water reservoir which originally was fed from a well just outside the Plantation House. The water from the reservoir tank was used in the running of the plantation’s boiling house to process the sugar cane into sugar and molasses. Although the pool certainly doesn’t look like a water tank any longer, one of the original buttresses can be seen outside the west wall.
The swimming pool at The Yard was constructed in the remnants of a large building which housed livestock and, later on, farm machinery and equipment. The large pool deck is elevated from the surrounding ground level and affords breathtaking views of the ocean; the expansive open deck offers a variety of shade and sun areas.
There are a number of places to walk and enjoy different types of scenery and many of the residents in the area are recreational walkers, some accompanied by their dogs. The main public road stretches for about a mile up the hill between Sion Hill and Springhead Plantations, with pastoral scenery on either side and ocean views to the west. This is a quiet road with little traffic, but common-sense precautions should always be observed. Please remember, too, that the lands on either side of the road are private property.
Because Sion Hill is situated on a hillside, the area is blessed by constant fresh breezes almost the entire year; air conditioning is not required, and fans are needed only on occasion. Sion Hill enjoys one other special blessing in that the entire area, which is surrounded by mature mahogany trees, remains an oasis of privacy in an increasingly popular and developing island. Sion Hill and the two adjacent plantations (Taitts and Springhead) are serviced by one main road, with no connecting roads to other areas; there are no bus routes or traffic to any areas other than the three plantations and the upscale residential sites close by – Turtleback Ridge, Mahogany Woods and Mahogany Park.
The plantation has been owned by the Massiah family since the early 1920’s; three generations of descendants still live on the premises. In 1998 the main plantation house (circa 1790) was completely restored by Ruth Ward (nee Massiah), the present owner. Every effort was made to ensure that the character of the building remained as it had been. Each portion has been completely updated and equipped with modern conveniences.
When staying at Sion Hill we recommend you hire a car. We can provide quotes and make all the arrangements for you. You are not far way from Holetown, just a 5 minute drive. Here you will find everything you need in terms of shops, restaurants, nightlife, even a cinema and a 24/7 ED Medical Facility. There are no private beaches, so you a free to sample as many as you like – again just a short drive away with easy beach parking. The island is easy to drive around and relatively small, just 24 miles long and 14 miles wide. You can take a tour to the East coast, visit some wonderful gardens, historic houses or take an eco-tour at PEG Farm. There is so much to do. For the energetic there is tennis and watersports. You can practice yoga, and if that leaves you in need of therapy, then we highly recommend the ‘spa at home’ services of TUTCH.
